Education

Program Description

Our Education Program is designed to help Epekwitnewaq Mi’kmaq students reach their full potential at every stage of their educational journey, by encouraging academic, cultural, and social growth from Early Years to Grade 12.

Our mission is to empower member First Nations communities to deliver quality education services for the students within their care. We proactively address identified needs, offer technical advice and advocacy, and build relationships with educational partners to guarantee that Mi’kmaq learners have access to high-quality education and support services.

Our Education Program staff work closely with administrators, teachers, and staff of John J. Sark Memorial School, Westisle Family of Schools, Bluefield Family of Schools, and Morell Family of Schools to address the unique needs of First Nations students. To better support students, schools, and communities, the Mi’kmaq Confederacy of PEI provides additional support to educators and learners through service contracts.

Areas of Focus:

  • Ensure education services better reflect student needs, culture and language.
  • Help students and their families develop goals to address school absenteeism and discontinuation.
  • Provide technology support and innovative learning solutions for students, staff, and schools.
  • Increase opportunities for Mi’kmaq language and cultural instruction across the province.

Advocacy & Partnerships

Our program acts as a liaison between First Nation communities and educational partners such as the PEI Department of Education and Early Years, the Public Schools Branch, and La Commission scolaire de langue française. We work with education partners to ensure Mi’kmaq and Indigenous perspectives are reflected in provincial curriculum and policies ultimately leading to improvements in educational outcomes for all learners attending Band Operated and Provincial schools.

John J. Sark Memorial School

An essential component of a student’s education is having a safe and healthy place to learn. Located in the Mi’kmaq community of Lennox Island, John J. Sark Memorial School is the only Band-operated school in Epekwitk (PEI). It welcomes approximately 50 students from Kindergarten to Grade 6.
