Kennah Brant, a multi-sport athlete from Prince Edward Island and proud member of the Mohawk Nation, has been named one of this year’s recipients of the Tom Longboat Award, one of the highest honours in Indigenous sport in Canada.
The award was presented at the 2025 National Indigenous Sports Gala held on October 25, 2025 in Ottawa, Ontario, where the Aboriginal Sport Circle celebrated its 30th anniversary. Themed “Celebrating 30 Years of Indigenous Excellence in Sport”, the Gala celebrated the past, present, and future achievements of Indigenous athletes and coaches in Canada.
“I am so grateful and extremely honoured to have received this award. Having the opportunity to meet and celebrate with such talented, passionate and hardworking Indigenous athletes was an inspirational experience,” said Kennah Brant. “We all have a responsibility to the next generation of Indigenous athletes to continue to give them spaces and opportunities to shine. Thank you to the Indigenous Sport Circle of PEI and my family for all that they have done to support me throughout my journey.”

As an elite-level hockey goalie, Kennah has built an impressive hockey career playing for the Eastern Stars and Western Wolves U18 AAA teams before joining the Boston Hockey Academy while attending the Academy of Notre Dame. She now trains at Purcell Hockey Academy in Kimberley, B.C., on a full scholarship, where she also serves as the school’s Indigenous Ambassador, supporting and connecting with the local Indigenous community.
“Kennah’s dedication, hard work, and leadership embody the spirit of the Tom Longboat Award,” said Kateri Coade, Executive Director of the Mi’kmaq Confederacy of PEI. “She is not only a tremendous athlete but a positive role model for many Indigenous youth in Epekwitk, and we are incredibly proud of her accomplishments.”
Kennah represented Epekwitk in track and field at the 2023 North American Indigenous Games in Halifax and was recently honoured with the Genevieve Nikanus Red Dress Award for her leadership, sportsmanship, and dedication to empowering others through sport.
The Tom Longboat Award was established in 1951 and celebrates the achievements of Indigenous athletes in Canada. It remains the longest standing and one of the most prestigious awards for the Indigenous athletes in the country.
