PEI Athlete, Keegan MacDougall, Wins Prestigious Tom Longboat Award

The Aboriginal Sport Circle (ASC) hosted the first-ever National Indigenous Sports Gala on November 23, 2024. The inaugural event took place on the traditional and unceded territory of the Anishinaabe Algonquin Nation at the Westin Hotel in Ottawa, Ontario.

The Gala, titled “Celebrating Indigenous Sporting Excellence”, stood as a testament to the rich heritage and remarkable achievements of Indigenous athletes, coaches, and leaders across Canada. It aimed to empower Indigenous communities by recognizing and validating their tremendous accomplishments and contributions to sport, recreation, physical activity and traditional practices.

During this memorable evening, attendees had the opportunity to witness the unveiling of the distinguished ASC Tom Longboat and National Indigenous Coaching Award recipients. These awards honour individuals for their outstanding dedication and impact within Indigenous sports, recreation, physical activity, and traditional practices.

Among the recipients was Epekwitk athlete, Keegan MacDougall, an exceptional swimmer who was recognized for his hard work, dedication, and passion for the sport. Last summer at the 2023 North American Indigenous Games in Halifax, Keegan brought home six medals for Team PEI including three gold, two silver, and one bronze.

The Tom Longboat Award has a rich history, celebrating the achievements of Indigenous athletes in Canada. Historically, this prestigious honour was awarded regionally, with a national winner chosen from the regional recipients. Over time, the regional awards were discontinued, and the award was given only nationally in partnership with Canada’s Sports Hall of Fame. The ASC is excited to revive this cherished tradition with regional awards.

The Gala created an atmosphere of celebration and camaraderie, providing a unique platform for networking among peers. Attendees gained invaluable insights into the transformative power of Indigenous sports, recreation, and traditional practices.
