Alexis Jadis of Abegweit First Nation will be Team PEI’s flagbearer for the Opening Ceremony of the 2023 North American Indigenous Games at Scotiabank Centre in Kjipuktuk (Halifax) on Sunday, July 16 at 7:30 p.m. “It is truly an honour to be selected out of all the amazing, talented athletes representing PEI,” said Alexis Jadis, Team PEI Flagbearer for the 2023 North American Indigenous Games. “I’m excited to carry the flag that represents my home province because it is a safe and welcoming place that I grew up in, and I’m proud to be an Islander!” The announcement was made this morning by Chef de Mission, Lynn Ann Hogan, and Assistant Chef de Mission, Breanne Lewis, after a random draw. “With such a tremendous group of young athletes, we knew that whichever name we drew, they would represent our province to the fullest,” said Lynn Ann Hogan, Chef de Mission for Team PEI. “I am proud to extend my warmest congratulations to Alexis Jadis on being named the flagbearer for Team PEI. I know you will inspire your fellow athletes and embody the spirit of Team PEI as we come together to celebrate sport and culture.” The thirteen-year-old will be competing in 3D Archery, one of three traditional Indigenous sports included in the program. The sport is played using three-dimensional animal targets. Ranging in size, each target has its own set of challenges and leads to an exciting and competitive atmosphere. “On behalf of Abegweit First Nation, congratulations to Alexis Jadis for the well-deserved honor of being named Team PEI’s flagbearer for the upcoming 2023 North American Indigenous Games,” said Chief Junior Gould of Abegweit First Nation. ” As you carry our flag with pride, may your spirit and determination inspire generations to come, showcasing the resilience and excellence of our Indigenous communities.” The Opening Ceremony can be streamed live on CBC Gem on Sunday, July 16 at 7:30 p.m. ADT. The event will feature an athlete parade and showcase the Host Nation of Mi’kma’ki. To stay up to date on Team PEI action, follow PEI Aboriginal Sport Circle on Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter.
