The PEI Aboriginal Sport Circle is pleased to announce the athletes and team volunteers who will represent Epekwitk at the 2023 North American Indigenous Games in Kjipuktuk (Halifax) from July 15-23, 2023. The North American Indigenous Games is an international multi-sport event aimed at helping Indigenous athletes from Turtle Island (North America) realize the collective potential of our bodies, minds, spirit and of our people – our hopes and dreams – the spirit strong, brave and true. The 10th edition of the Games will bring together over 5,000 athletes and team staff from more than 756 Indigenous Nations to celebrate, share, and reconnect through sport and culture. “The North American Indigenous Games provide a unique opportunity for our youth to celebrate, share, and reconnect through sport and culture,” said Chief Junior Gould of Abegweit First Nation. “We are very proud of our young athletes and look forward to cheering them on in Kjipuktuk this summer.” “Congratulations to all the athletes, coaches, and support staff who have worked hard to represent Epekwitk at the 2023 North American Indigenous Games,” said Chief Darlene Bernard of Lennox Island First Nation. “We know that when youth are actively engaged in sport, it helps build healthier communities and improves their self-esteem, leadership skills, and overall well-being.” “It is with great pride and excitement that we announce the incredible group of young Indigenous athletes who will be representing PEI at the 2023 North American Indigenous Games,” said Senior Program Coordinator for the PEI Aboriginal Sport Circle and Team PEI Chef de Mission, Lynn Ann Hogan. “These Games were awarded to Kjipuktuk (Halifax) in 2018 but were delayed due to the pandemic. To say that the athletes, coaches, volunteers and host society are excited would be a huge understatement. The Games are finally here, and we can’t wait!” Epekwitk will be represented by 32 athletes competing in five sports including athletics, badminton, swimming, wrestling, and 3D archery, which is a traditional Indigenous sport. Team PEI has assembled a dedicated group of coaches, sport managers, and mission staff to ensure youth have an amazing experience at the Games.
